Welcome back from Fall Break! I hope everyone had a great week of fun and relaxation.
Here is what we are working on in 2nd grade: Writing: We will work on speaking and listening skills, as students share their personal narrative pieces. Students will be active listeners and will show their knowledge of writing as they share compliments with their peers. ELAGSE2L1 Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking. ELAGSE2W3 Write narratives in which they recount a well-elaborated event or short sequence of events, include details to describe actions, thoughts, and feelings, use temporal words to signal event order, and provide a sense of closure. ELAGSE2SL3 Ask and answer questions about what a speaker says in order to clarify comprehension, gather additional information, or deepen understanding of a topic or issue. ——————————————————————————————-- Reading: This week, we will continue to ask and answer questions to strengthen understanding, especially how characters in a story respond to major challenges and events. We will continue working with long vowels and vowel teams. We will continue daily independent practice to build stamina and increase fluency. Students will: ELAGSE2RL5: Describe the overall structure of a story, including how the beginning introduces story, the middle provides major events and challenges, and the ending concludes the action. ELAGSERF3a/b: Identify the sounds for common vowel teams; can decode words with common vowel teams. ————————————————————- Math: We will continue working with addition and subtraction strategies to solve one-step word problems within 20. We will use words like combine, join, count on, take away, remove, count back, compare, total, sum, addend, and equation, as we explore unknowns in all positions (including Result Unknown, Change Unknown, and Start Unknown). Students will: MGSE2.OA.1 Use addition and subtraction within 100 to solve one- and two-step word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions, e.g., by using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem. ————————————————————————————– Social Studies Inquiry: This week, we will continue to explore the five regions of Georgia, including the landforms and physical features of each. Students will begin to make connections with how Native Americans may have used these features and adapted to the land. On Friday, students will show their understanding by creating an edible map of Georgia! SS2G1: Locate and compare the geographic regions of Georgia: Blue Ridge, Piedmont, Coastal Plain, Ridge and Valley, and Appalachian Plateau. Important Information: Fall Conferences: During the week of October 14, we will schedule an individual conference with every student. ELAGSE2W5: With guidance and support from adults and peers, focus on a topic and strengthen writing as needed by revising and editing. ———————————————————————————– Reading: This week, students will explore words with vowel teams like: ay, ai, ee, ea, ie, and oa. (Think, “When two vowels go walking, the first one does the talking.”) We will spend two weeks on this spelling list! It will be assessed NEXT Friday, September 20th! The reading focus will again be on characters in a story and how they respond to major events and challenges. Students will also investigate the strategy of using context clues to find the meaning of unknown words. Students will: ELA2RF3b: Identify and decode sounds and words for common vowel teams. ELAGSE2RL3: Describe how characters in a story respond to major events and challenges. ELAGSE2L4,5: Use sentence level context as a clue to the meaning of a word or phrase. ———————————————————————————- Math: Students will continue working with place value and representing numbers in different ways. Continue to practice math fact strategies at home as well. Students will: MGSE2NBT1: Understand that the three digits of a three-digit number represent amounts of hundreds, tens, and ones; e.g., 706 equals 7 hundreds, 0 tens, and 6 ones. MGSE2NBT3: Read and write numbers to 1000 using base-ten numerals, number names, and expanded form. Examples:
Science Inquiry: As the first Unit of Inquiry comes to a close, students will reflect upon their learning and will apply their knowledge to support the Central Idea: Changing physical properties may affect classification. Students will: S2P1a&b: Describe and classify different objects according to their physical properties AND construct an explanation for how structures made from small pieces can be disassembled and then rearranged to make new and different structures. S2P1c: Explain how some changes in matter caused by heating and cooling can be reversed while others are irreversible. Important Information Publix Math Night: This Thursday 5-7 pm at the Publix in Vinings! I will be there to help you solve 2nd grade math problems 5-5:30! Here is what we are working on in 2nd grade:
Writing: As we continue to learn the parts that make up Narrative Writing, our focus will be on using temporal words to sequence events and writing a strong closing. Students will: ELAGSE2L1: Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking. ELAGSE2W3: Write narratives in which they recount a well-elaborated event or short sequence of events, include details to describe actions, thoughts, and feelings, use temporal words to signal event order, and provide a sense of closure. Reading: This week, we will work with classifying words with short and long vowels and then applying the rules as we read and write. Our reading focus will be on characters in a story and how they respond to major events and challenges. Students will: ELAGSE2RF3a&b: Identify when a vowel is short or long when reading regularly spelled one-syllable words. ELAGSE2RL3: Describe how characters in a story respond to major events and challenges. ELAGSE2RL10: By the end of the year, read and comprehend literature, including stories and poetry, in the grades 2-3 text complexity band proficiently, with scaffolding as needed at the high end of the range. (End of the year goal is DRA Level 28M.) The students will be assessed on their word lists every Friday. Word Work activities completed in class to practice can be taken home to further complete/review. The students did AMAZING on the spelling assessment last week! Keep it up! Math: We have begun an inquiry into the classification of numbers using place value. Students will explore the different ways to represent numbers and will develop the understanding that the value of the digit depends upon its place in a number. We will also explore the difference between PLACE and VALUE, as we apply knowledge of the base-ten system. Students will: MGSE2.NBT.1 Understand that the three digits of a three-digit number represent amounts of hundreds, tens, and ones; e.g., 706 equals 7 hundreds, 0 tens, and 6 ones. MGSE2.NBT.3 Read and write numbers to 1000 using base-ten numerals, number names, and expanded form. Examples:
Science Inquiry: We continue with the Central Idea: Changing physical properties may affect classification, as we explore changes in matter. Wednesday, our class will explore changes in matter with a Pop Rocks experiment! Throughout the week, students will complete a building challenge! Students are encouraged to bring in any building toys/supplies. Back to Football Friday: This Friday in Specials, students will participate in football activities! Students may wear a shirt related to the NFL/College football or regular Friday standard attire shirt. Please sign up here to volunteer: https://signup.com/go/fuaUnqQ Here is what we are working on in 2nd grade:
Writing: We continue to explore Narrative Writing, as we work through the writing process to pre-write, draft, revise and edit, publish, and share! We have exploring the characteristics of Narrative Writing, and our focus will be on writing an introduction to “hook” or “lead” the reader. Students will: ELAGSE2L1 Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking. ELAGSE2W3 Write narratives in which they recount a well-elaborated event or short sequence of events, include details to describe actions, thoughts, and feelings, use temporal words to signal event order, and provide a sense of closure. Students should keep writing notebooks/binders at school in order to keep track of all writing resources and pieces all year! Reading: As we continue daily independent practice to build stamina and increase fluency, we will concentrate on how a reader uses the pictures to understand the characters, setting, or plot in the story. Students will: ELAGSE2RL1 Ask and answer such questions as who, what, where, when, why, and how to demonstrate understanding of key details in a text. ELAGSE2RL7 Use information gained from the illustrations and words in a print or digital text to demonstrate understanding of its characters, setting, or plot. ELAGSE2RL10 By the end of the year, read and comprehend literature, including stories and poetry, in the grades 2-3 text complexity band proficiently, with scaffolding as needed at the high end of the range. (End of the year goal is DRA Level 28M.) Students should have at least one Media Center book with them at school every day! We will visit the Media Center as a class every other week to check out or renew books. In addition, students may check out books before 7:50 am and during Recess. Math: We have begun an exploration into the base ten system. We are investigating representing numbers with base ten blocks and understanding that there are different ways of showing the same number (efficient and inefficient). Students will: MGSE2.NBT.1: Understand that the three digits of a three-digit number represent amounts of hundreds, tens, and ones; and understand that 100 can be thought of as a bundle of ten tens, called a “hundred.” Students should continue to review mental adding and subtracting skills with facts 1-20 at home! We will begin tracking our fact mastery in class very soon! Science Inquiry: We continue to explore matter and the Key Concepts of Form, Causation, and Change, as we develop the Central Idea, “Changing physical properties may affect classification.” Our inquiry learning will include some awesome hands-on activities, as we develop understanding of the changing states of matter. Students will: S2P1: Obtain, evaluate & communicate information about the properties of matter & changes that occur in objects.
Words of the Week (Spelling) Update: We have decided, as a 2nd grade team, to differentiate our spelling this year. This means that students will be given a spelling list that fits their individual needs. Students will be given a word card to be glued in agendas that will have either list A or list B highlighted. These are the words that your child will be practicing in class for their assessment. All students will practice the words in the BOTH list. One week, your child may be on list A and the next week they may be on the list B depending on their prior knowledge of the weekly skill. The skill is the same for both lists but the rigor of the words is differentiated. At the end of the week (Friday), the students will take an assessment on the words. They will be expected to spell their words, spell words with the same patterns, identify and fix incorrectly spelled words, identify correctly spelled words, and use the words correctly in a sentence. Please let me know if you have any questions about our spelling system or your child’s words. Field Trip: On Tuesday, our class will go on a field trip to the Fire Safety Village! Students should wear standard attire clothes that allows them to participate in a variety of movements activities, we recommend PE attire. Since we do not have class t-shirts yet, students may wear a collared standard attire shirt or a Teasley t-shirt. If students are bringing lunch from home, it must be completely disposable. It will be a wonderful day learning about safety! Frozen Friday: This year, fifth grade will be selling Frozen Friday passes, which help support their overnight field trip to Space Camp. Students who purchase a Frozen Friday pass will receive a fruit-based frozen treat each Friday. Please visit www.teasleypta.com to order a yearly or quarterly pass by Friday, August 30th. The first Frozen Friday will be served on September 6th. Early Release: This Wednesday, August 28 at 12:30 pm! PTA Meeting/Ice Cream Social/IB Info Night: This Thursday at 6:15 in the Café!
