Here is what we are working on in 2nd grade:
Writing: We continue to explore Narrative Writing, as we work through the writing process to pre-write, draft, revise and edit, publish, and share! We have exploring the characteristics of Narrative Writing, and our focus will be on writing an introduction to “hook” or “lead” the reader. Students will: ELAGSE2L1 Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking. ELAGSE2W3 Write narratives in which they recount a well-elaborated event or short sequence of events, include details to describe actions, thoughts, and feelings, use temporal words to signal event order, and provide a sense of closure. Students should keep writing notebooks/binders at school in order to keep track of all writing resources and pieces all year! Reading: As we continue daily independent practice to build stamina and increase fluency, we will concentrate on how a reader uses the pictures to understand the characters, setting, or plot in the story. Students will: ELAGSE2RL1 Ask and answer such questions as who, what, where, when, why, and how to demonstrate understanding of key details in a text. ELAGSE2RL7 Use information gained from the illustrations and words in a print or digital text to demonstrate understanding of its characters, setting, or plot. ELAGSE2RL10 By the end of the year, read and comprehend literature, including stories and poetry, in the grades 2-3 text complexity band proficiently, with scaffolding as needed at the high end of the range. (End of the year goal is DRA Level 28M.) Students should have at least one Media Center book with them at school every day! We will visit the Media Center as a class every other week to check out or renew books. In addition, students may check out books before 7:50 am and during Recess. Math: We have begun an exploration into the base ten system. We are investigating representing numbers with base ten blocks and understanding that there are different ways of showing the same number (efficient and inefficient). Students will: MGSE2.NBT.1: Understand that the three digits of a three-digit number represent amounts of hundreds, tens, and ones; and understand that 100 can be thought of as a bundle of ten tens, called a “hundred.” Students should continue to review mental adding and subtracting skills with facts 1-20 at home! We will begin tracking our fact mastery in class very soon! Science Inquiry: We continue to explore matter and the Key Concepts of Form, Causation, and Change, as we develop the Central Idea, “Changing physical properties may affect classification.” Our inquiry learning will include some awesome hands-on activities, as we develop understanding of the changing states of matter. Students will: S2P1: Obtain, evaluate & communicate information about the properties of matter & changes that occur in objects.
Words of the Week (Spelling) Update: We have decided, as a 2nd grade team, to differentiate our spelling this year. This means that students will be given a spelling list that fits their individual needs. Students will be given a word card to be glued in agendas that will have either list A or list B highlighted. These are the words that your child will be practicing in class for their assessment. All students will practice the words in the BOTH list. One week, your child may be on list A and the next week they may be on the list B depending on their prior knowledge of the weekly skill. The skill is the same for both lists but the rigor of the words is differentiated. At the end of the week (Friday), the students will take an assessment on the words. They will be expected to spell their words, spell words with the same patterns, identify and fix incorrectly spelled words, identify correctly spelled words, and use the words correctly in a sentence. Please let me know if you have any questions about our spelling system or your child’s words. Field Trip: On Tuesday, our class will go on a field trip to the Fire Safety Village! Students should wear standard attire clothes that allows them to participate in a variety of movements activities, we recommend PE attire. Since we do not have class t-shirts yet, students may wear a collared standard attire shirt or a Teasley t-shirt. If students are bringing lunch from home, it must be completely disposable. It will be a wonderful day learning about safety! Frozen Friday: This year, fifth grade will be selling Frozen Friday passes, which help support their overnight field trip to Space Camp. Students who purchase a Frozen Friday pass will receive a fruit-based frozen treat each Friday. Please visit www.teasleypta.com to order a yearly or quarterly pass by Friday, August 30th. The first Frozen Friday will be served on September 6th. Early Release: This Wednesday, August 28 at 12:30 pm! PTA Meeting/Ice Cream Social/IB Info Night: This Thursday at 6:15 in the Café! This week…
Writing: We will continue to classify sentences, as our focus turns to applying the rules of capitalization and punctuation when writing. We will explore the characteristics of Narrative Writing, and we will begin the process of planning and pre-writing. Students will: ELAGSE2L1 Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking. (End of the year goal is DRA Level 28M.) —————————————————————————————– Math: We will continue to practice and apply strategies for addition and subtraction within 20: making a ten; doubles; doubles plus 1; and using a number line. In addition, we will review and practice fact families and skip counting. At home, students can review these adding strategies as they become fluent and automatic with facts 1-20. Students will: MGSE2.OA.2 Fluently add and subtract within 20 using mental strategies. By end of Grade 2, know from memory all sums of two one-digit numbers. MGSE2.NBT.2 Count within 1000; skip-count by 5s, 10s, and 100s. —————————————————————————————– Science Inquiry: We have begun the year with the Transdisciplinary Theme How the World Works: an inquiry into the natural world and its laws. In this unit students will develop an understanding of the Central Idea: Changing physical properties may affect classification. The Key Concepts that go along with this unit are Form, Causation, and Change. This week, we will explore the three states of matter (solid, liquid, gas) with a Matter Walk and our Matter Museum. We will sort and classify objects using their physical properties, and we will inquire into how these properties may change. Students will: S2P1. Obtain, evaluate & communicate information about the properties of matter & changes that occur in objects. a. Describe & classify different objects according to their physical properties. Important Information: Student Numbers: Students use their school ID numbers (written in front of agendas) for the Cafe, Media Center, and logging on computers at school. Thank you for supporting your student in memorizing this number! Fire Safety Forms: Thank you for sending in permission slips, student waivers, and student homework for the Fire Safety Village! These are all required for our field trip next Tuesday! This week, we are: Writing: We will begin our Writing Workshop with an inquiry into the types of sentences. Students will make observations about the three types of sentences (Asking, Telling, Exclamatory) and will begin practicing sorting, as well as creating each type. This inquiry activity will help guide us into our unit on Narrative Writing. Reading: We have begun Reading Workshop by practicing independent reading to build stamina. In addition, we will inquire into strategies to increase fluency and comprehension. This week, students will practice asking and answering questions stories related with IB concepts and Learner Profiles such as Caring and Open-Minded.
